Russell Craig (b. 1980, Philadelphia, USA) is a New York–based, self-taught visual artist whose practice is defined by a rigorous and innovative use of materials, combining large-scale portraiture with architectural form. Working across leather, canvas, found objects, and industrial compounds, Craig constructs densely layered surfaces that are both tactile and structural, transforming unconventional materials into complex visual systems that explore accumulation, pressure, and duration. Shaped by his experience growing up in the foster care system and spending over a decade incarcerated, Craig’s work engages institutional structures not as fixed narratives but as generative frameworks for making. Drawing from both institutional and vernacular sources—repurposing stitched leather, woven fragments, and coded visual markers—his compositions operate between abstraction and figuration. Through this process, Craig expands the language of contemporary painting, using material as both medium and subject to articulate presence, memory, and control. His work frequently repurposes institutional formats like mugshots, intake numbers, prison doors, and even prized prison commissary items, recasting them as sites of visibility, dignity, and reclamation.

Craig was the co-founder of Right of Return USA, the first national fellowship supporting formerly incarcerated artists founded with the support of Agnes Gund, and has served on the board of the Center for Art and Advocacy. He is a Creative Capital Fellow (2024), Art for Justice Fellow (2018), and three-time resident at Silver Art Projects. His public art commissions include projects with Mural Arts Philadelphia, For Freedoms, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. An advocate and public speaker, Craig has participated in speaking engagements at institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Brown, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, MOCA Los Angeles, and Hauser & Wirth. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Artforum, The Guardian, ArtNews, Harper’s Bazaar, and the Emmy-winning HBO documentary Art & Krimes by Krimes.

He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including at The Rose Art Museum, MoMA PS1, the Ford Foundation, the Bunker Artspace (West Palm Beach), and the Philadelphia African-American Museum, among others. His work has been acquired by the Brooklyn Museum, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, The Bronx Museum, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as several notable private collections including the Agnes Gund Collection, the Beth DeWoody Collection, the Tim & Stephanie Ingrassia Collection, the Arnold Lehman Collection, and the Marie-Josee Kravis Collection, among others.
